I understand why you might think I was being ironic (especially if you're referring to the Zimmerman Telegram), but only in recent years (and by recent, I mean the last 50 years) has the administration gone too far in "protecting" American soil. the decisions and actions taking place just further prove that we haven't had real representation in our president, but rather the desires of interest groups and contributors defeating our own.
also (and this coincides with our nation's ideas on defense after WWII), I don't agree with Communism, I believe it is an ultimately flawed system, but I don't think it should (or should have been) the responsibility of our American youth to fight battles against another nations' ideals. we've gone past the idea of protecting ourselves, but with a mindset that other nations are wrong and only we can fix them.
and I'm sure it's that sort of policy that is hurting the reputation of the States rather than helping it.

I didn't know how to assess it, because the "don't threaten or attack us or we'll fuck you up" made me think of the Bush doctrine. But I wasn't referring to the Zimmerman Telegram, because I have no clue what it is although I may have heard of it.

Zimmerman Telegram was a message picked up by the British across a German signal to Mexico offering American land to Mexico if it would join in the German cause in WWI.
it was probably fabricated in order to give America the final push it needed to enter the war (the British brought the "intelligence" to Woodrow Wilson a month after it was deciphered).
