Arriving on the scene releasing their first demos back in the mid-80's, as R.A.V.A.G.E., Raging Atheists Vowing A Gory End, these demos set the precedent for their debut album as Atheist despite a couple challenging mishaps (a legal matter concerning a label they were signed to going bankrupt and the rights to their songs) that seemed to challenge the release of Piece of Time and perhaps even the existence of the band. Eventually signing a deal with European label Active Records and touring with Candlemass, Atheist accrued a rather loyal fanbase throughout Europe before Metal Blade received the license deal to distribute it in the States a year later. Piece of Time displayed the vicious dual assault of Kelly Shaefer and Rand Burkey, the finesse and excellence of legendary bassist Roger Patterson, and the pummeling, bludgeoning attack of Steve Flynn on drums. In between shows and the pre-production recordings of Unquestionable Presence, Roger Patterson tragically died on the way to the hospital after their van had been involved in an accident, ultimately resulting in Roger's propulsion from the vehicle. There were difficulties finding a bassist, simply because there are not many who could keep up with Roger, but eventually they recruited Tony Choy (they asked Doug Keyser of Watchtower, but he declined) and finished out the recording of Unquestionable Presence, quite possibly their greatest album. In 1993, the band recorded and released Elements, seemingly released to fulfill their three album contract, before breaking up. Since then, Atheist have reformed and started playing shows in 2006, releasing their first live album at Wacken.

haven't heard Elements yet, worship Piece of Time and the R.A.V.A.G.E. demos. Unquestionable Presence blows me away and is growing to be my favorite Atheist album.
