I've been reading this book on and off for the last while, and it's really quite fascinating. It tracks the evolution of music starting with the likes of Strauss and Mahler and moving on to Schoenberg and the birth of dissonance and serialism and how everything tied together and evolved into various forms of contemporary music. I'm not too far in, but it's full of incredibly rich info and lots of good music to listen to. Highly rec'd for anyone interested in music of any sort.
