Discharge's hardcore days
I'll update this post/make a new one when I get some more content, but they influenced pretty much the entire movement, so Discharge are a good place to start.

Re: Straight up hardcore basics
Bad Brains, Black Flag, Discharge, and Minor Threat is about as basic as it gets. My knowledge of hardcore punk is pretty basic anyway, so this thread is definitely relevant to my interests.

Re: Straight up hardcore basics
That Minor Threat album was freaking awesome, diggin' discharge, my bad brains album isn't playing right but I've heard it and love it, and I'm listening to Damaged right now and so far it's awesome.
I used to love the ideas behind punk but found its execution to be kinda kitschy and grating, especially the sort of sing-a-long vocal style and riffing, but I'm definitely getting over that.

I love the incredible, unrelenting energy a lot of punk bands have.

wouldn't really consider power violence "hardcore basics", but good to see some of that taste.Mosh wrote:Minor Threat, Black Flag, Spazz, Infest, Magrudergrind, SM-70, Bad Brains, Assholeparade, Fuck On The Beach... If you want more just ask.
Re: Straight up hardcore basics
True enough. It was staple in getting me into hardcore though, so I figured Id pass some of the better bands on.
Also, check out Discharge, and G-ANX.

Re: Straight up hardcore basics
Definately seconding Group Sex by the Circle Jerks. Great GREAT album. And it's so short that you can get through it in no time. For a while, I used to just put that shit on repeat in class and listen to it like three times in a row.
Husker Du is also cool, but it's not really like typical, raw hardcore punk. Still in the 80s hardcore scene, but not really a good example of what hardcore was. Their later stuff, especially, is basically catchy "alternative rock" with really thick guitars. Sing along stuff. Still good, but certainly out of that vein completely.
The Minutemen are sweet, too.. but it's the same deal with them. Hardcore additude, different style of music. I almost kind of like that better, though.

Husker Du's Zen Arcade was pretty good, though not really a pure hardcore album. That's my only experience with them.

Zen Arcade was kind of so so for me. A lot of the songs seemed to kind of dissolve, especially near the middle, and the album just runs too damn long. Hard to listen to in one sitting. I like New Day Rising better - the record that came out after Zen Arcade. It's a lot shorter, tighter and more varied. Little less chaotic, so it might even be less of a pure hardcore album that Zen.
Zen is still good, I just kind of have to pick out the songs I like and listen to them, instead of taking the album as a whole.

Re: Straight up hardcore basics
My War is easily my favorite. Family man is a good album, just be warned that 90% of it is Henry Rollin's fairly pretentious spoken word. Otherwise Damaged is a friggin' sweet album.Actumen wrote:What black flag album is good to get?
