Saint Vitus

Post by Kyle on Thu Jul 23, 2009 10:58 am

If there was ever a band that I could call best doom metal band, best metal band, and my personal favorite band in all of music, I would easily, without skipping a beat, name Saint Vitus as that band. Hailing from California, Saint Vitus got its first step in the musical realm 30 years ago under the name Tyrant and after releasing their 1979 demo they changed their name to Saint Vitus. Five years later, the legendary, monstrous self-titled album is released, displaying the sinister riffing of Dave Chandler, the charming vocals of Scott Reagers, the beastly bass of Mark Adams, and the plodding yet powerful drumming of Armando Acosta. Heavily influenced by Black Sabbath, Saint Vitus took a more minimal approach, the song-writing in songs like Zombie Hunger and Burial At Sea evoke a true sense of doom like no other band has been able to convey prior to and since the release of that album. Scott Reagers continued to sing for Saint Vitus until 1986, when he was replaced with Scott "Wino" Weinrich. The Wino era is marked with an evolution in lyrical concepts, taking a more darker, personal standpoint rather than a more "theatrical" and horror take that's more evident in the Reagers era. 1986 saw the release of what many call Saint Vitus's best album, Born Too Late. Wino continued to make a total of three albums altogether with Saint Vitus, V being another highlight of their discography. In 1993, Christian Lindersson of Count Raven fame took up vocals for the 1993 album C.O.D. (Children of Doom), and then in 1995, Reagers rejoined the band to sing on the Die Healing album. Since then, the band has done reunion shows with Wino in 2003 and more recently this year, headline at Roadburn.

V is my favorite album outside of the two classics, great fucking tunes. "I Bleed Black", "When Emotion Dies", "Jack Frost" (goddamn, that solo is completely otherworldy), and "Angry Man" being highlights for me.
